Before 1923, there was no school to serve the children of this area. Students had to cross the railroad tracks and walk some distance to the Las Vegas Grammar School. Seen below, the school was built in 1910 on Fourth Street between Clark and Bridger Streets. In 1923, a school was opened at Washington and "D" Streets called Las Vegas Grammar School Branch No. 1. It became known as the Westside School. Additional classrooms were added in 1928 and eight more classrooms were added in 1948.

The Westside School was discontinued for educational use in 1967 and is presently owned by the City of Las Vegas. The Westside Alumni Association and the City of Las Vegas Historic Preservation Commission are working on plans to restore the school.
